In 2016, the Crowdfunding Exemption made it possible for the majority of Ontario residents to invest in Canadian startups and small businesses they believe in. Up to that point, it was illegal to invest in private companies unless you were considered Friends & Family or an Accredited Investor.
All investments through the Crowdfunding Exemption have strict rules set by the Ontario Securities Commission and must take place through a registered intermediary firm such as Equivesto Canada Inc. Each province has its own Securities Regulatory Authority, and each one controls the rules for equity crowdfunding in its own province.
